A shop interior visual revamp can attract new customers

brusgEvery retail outlet needs to present well. Not only do you want to attract the attention of passing customers, you also want them to feel comfortable once inside your store.

After all, the more at home customers feel, the longer they'll stay and the more money they are likely to spend.

So how can you create a shop interior that encourages customers to come in and buy?

Start at the front door

Sprucing up your shop's interior can definitely increase sales, says Mark Amos, General Manager of the Master Painters Association of Victoria. "It's about making the customer feel good about walking into a building," he says.

Try to view your store as a passerby, and ask yourself:

  • Are window displays up to date and representative of the stock inside?
  • Is signage clear?
  • Is the entrance uncluttered and wide enough for a casual browser to wander in?

Look at your layout

With so much retail competition, it's in your best interest to make the shopping experience as easy as possible for your customers.

"If you've got good layout and good presentation of your product, then people will tend to come back to that store," says John.

Paths through your store should be systematic and stock should be arranged so that it's easy to access and customers can find what they need.

Colour correcting

Choosing a colour scheme to distinguish your retail shop from the competition is somewhat of an art form and depends on your type of business and the image you wish to convey.

While a colour such as red has been known to stimulate appetites and grab attention, too much of it can be overwhelming. Primary colours might be great for a retail outlet that is targeting children, but generally won't attract a more sophisticated buyer.

John confirms that painters and decorators are trained in colour matching and are qualified to advise a colour scheme for your retail shop interior that will benefit your business.

More than a paint job

Consider how much more inviting your store could look with professionally painted signs, texture effects and the latest paint finishes.

Rather than opting for stark white walls, wallpaper features can make customers feel more at home, even if it's just a stylish border along the cornices.

Alternatively, super-modern digital print hangings, stencilled designs and murals can create an eye-catching feature that will encourage new customers to take that first step into your shop.

New look, new opportunities
