Fixing a software installation problem quickly will avoid downtime

image of software installationComputers are essential to the running of most businesses, so when you get a new one, you want to have it up and running as soon as possible. But sometimes setting up a new system doesn't go according to plan.

Here are some of the common installation problems that can occur when installing new software - and how to deal with them.

Preparing for installation

Many potential installation problems can be avoided by ensuring that your new software is compatible with your computer system. Check the minimum requirements for the software - these are usually printed on the packaging or contained in the information files.

Other things to check include:

  • Do you have enough space on your hard drive?
  • Is the software compatible with your operating system?
  • Do you have admin access, i.e. permission to install software on the computer?
  • Do you have the right serial numbers for the software?

Methods of software installation

The method for installing your software will vary depending on your computer's operating system, the particular software you are trying to install, and the format it's in (whether it's on a CD or a downloaded file, etc.)

Ensure you have the instructions that came with the software and follow the steps carefully. It's also a good idea to close any other programs that may be running.

Troubleshooting an installation problem

Sometimes the error message that pops up when an installation problem is encountered will tell you precisely what the problem is, but just as often there is no clear cause for the failure. In this case, try the following troubleshooting steps:

  • Restart the installation.
  • Check your internet connection; some software needs to connect to the internet in order to download additional files or verify registration.
  • If your installation CD is not working, try it on another computer.
  • If your software is from a download, try downloading the installer again, as it could be a corrupt file.
  • Check that you have not run out of disk space - if you have, you'll need to create some in order to proceed.
  • Ensure you have the correct serial number for the software you are installing and that you are entering the numbers correctly.
  • Check the 'help' files that came with the software - often the more common installation problems that people experience are documented, along with their solution.

Computer problems can be seriously debilitating to business operations, not to mention frustrating to those trying to fix them. So if the troubleshooting steps detailed above fail to resolve the problem, contact an IT professional and get your new computer up to speed in a flash.
