Save business money by using the right interstate furniture removalists

tapeMoving your business interstate can be a fraught process. Apart from all the important items that need to arrive safe and sound, you might also have to relocate staff. And you will certainly want to recommence your business operations as soon as possible in the new location.

Choosing the right interstate furniture removalists can save you the hassle involved with the process.

"If the move is not done correctly you could potentially arrive at your new premises with your business in disarray," says Jan Hanley from the Australian Furniture Removers Association (AFRA).

"This will cause you stress, as well as loss of income, with staff not able to do their job properly until things are set right."

Finding the right fit

The key to choosing an interstate removalist is assessing whether the mover meets the specific needs of your business.

Moving an accounting firm is different from moving a warehouse, so it's important that the removalist has experience with a business similar to yours.

"Many businesses put out a tender document stating their specific interstate moving needs and ask removalists to suggest why they can fulfil those needs and at what cost," says Jan. "It also asks for references, which can then be checked."

Protecting your assets

Often the most important element of an interstate move is your office data, either on paper or computer. With large distances to travel, there is a risk of damage or disorder when your things arrive at the other end.

Ask potential removalists about their systems for transferring your data from one location to another to ensure that no time is lost to missing or out-of-sequence files.

Safety and security

Removalists should provide evidence of appropriate industry OH&S training, so you are not liable for accidents or injuries that occur during the move.

AFRA accredits removalists whose staff have completed this training, and only AFRA-accredited companies can provide insurance cover for any losses or damage to your business.

Questions to ask

  • Has the removalist successfully moved a business like yours interstate before?
  • Do they have the appropriate equipment to transport your gear?
  • Is their staff trained specifically to handle your equipment?
  • Can they provide references?
  • Can they provide evidence of OH&S training and insurance?

Ask about additional services

Sometimes it's cheaper to sell or store some of your furniture and purchase new equipment when you reach your destination, rather than pay for transportation. Ask your removalist if they can provide this service for you.

If you need to relocate staff, some removalists can also provide a relocation service to help them settle into the new location.

Cheaper, or better?

Cheaper removalists may not necessarily save you money. They might not be as proficient, potentially causing headaches and increased downtime for your staff, both of which equate to money down the drain.

Do your research to make sure you find the mover who is right for you, and ensure your interstate furniture removalists can make the move efficient and cost effective.
