More than ever, businesses are looking for ways to do the right thing by the environment. Well, one easy, low-tech way to save energy is with commercial blinds.
By installing commercial blinds in your office, your business will save on heating and cooling bills, and for a relatively low cost you'll be giving your office a facelift at the same time.
With up to 50% of unwanted heat gain coming through your windows, the most effective way to insulate your business is with outdoor shading, says Joe Turner, President of the Blind Manufacturers' Association of Australia.
"When the sun hits the glass it magnifies the heat, so ideally you want something that stops it before it hits the window."
Options range from fixed louvre awnings that block the sun and heat but let the air circulate, to more sophisticated external sunscreen roll-up awnings, which are motor operated.
If outdoor commercial blinds are not an option for your business, Joe recommends internal aluminium awnings: "They're a very good internal heat-protection product for windows."
Roller blinds are more of a fashion statement and less effective for reducing energy costs, he says. "They do offer some heat protection but are not as effective as aluminium venetians."
When installing commercial blinds, you may want to consider additional ways to increase energy efficiency, such as opting for glass with reflecting tints.
Many businesses are also sealing their venetian blinds between two panes of glass. According to Joe this is not only good for further reducing heating and cooling costs, but is also very hygienic.
"With the blinds between glass there's no cleaning, so it's particularly good for hospitals," he says.
If you are looking to reduce the amount of heat inside your premises, and your windows face east or west, external blinds may be the best option.
Colour is also an important factor with sunscreen roller blinds, as it can affect the efficiency of the blind. But for a good office feel, this should be balanced with the interior colour scheme.
For a relatively small investment, new commercial blinds will save your business money through increasing energy efficiency, but just how much will vary considerably.
