National electrical contractors can save your business money

toolWe all know the dangers of attempting electrical work ourselves, but choosing national electrical contractors can be just as fraught. Indeed, not all electrical contractors are created equal, and it pays to ask questions and shop around to find the right person for the job.

Are they licensed and insured?

While each state has its own regulations governing electrical work, all require that industrial electrical contractors be licensed with their respective government authority.

"A licence means the electrical contractor has passed a minimum level of testing," explains Malcolm Richards, CEO of Master Electricians Australia. "Feel free to ask them to show you their licence, or look them up on your local licensing authority's website."

It's equally important to choose a contractor who is insured. This will cover any damage or injury that may occur on your premises, and may also protect you from poor workmanship.

If in doubt, choose a Master Electrician

To be accredited as a Master Electrician, national electrical contractors must provide evidence of the necessary licensing and insurance, and also pass a rigorous auditing process.

"Our program ensures contractors have an active safety-management system, as well as a quality-management system to ensure they deliver the service the customer expects," Malcolm explains.

"Customer feedback is a key part of this and, as a third party, we accept compliments and complaints about Master Electricians, and pass them on to be addressed."

Master Electricians must also give a 12-month workmanship guarantee. "In most cases it doesn't cost any more to hire a Master Electrician," says Malcolm. "In fact, it may actually cost less, because you're getting the job done right the first time."

Get more than one quote

For the best price, make sure you shop around. The National Electrical and Communications Association recommends getting at least three quotes from different national electrical contractors before making a decision.

Each quote should clearly outline the full extent of the work to be done, and the costs. Any variations to a quote should always be stated and agreed to in writing.

What about 'green' electricians?

The National Electrical and Communications Association has developed a green electrician training program to equip national electrical contractors with the latest information on energy-saving products and systems.

Accredited green electricians have the skills and knowledge to advise you on the best energy-saving strategies for your office, and will help you not only reduce your carbon footprint, but save on energy bills, too.
