Keep your business safe with a keyless door lock system

“Access control is a big thing because it just prevents any unwarranted traffic of unauthorised people through the building,” says Helen Ferriman of Westlock Security.

Digital security door locks can take a number of forms, including swipe cards, digital keypads and fingerprint access.

Manage the access levels of your staff

Digital security door locks cut down on the number of people who can access various parts of the building. Restricted keying allows you to program the system so that subordinates have limited access but management can go anywhere using their ‘key’, which might be a swipe card, pass code or fingerprint.

Lost security pass - no big deal

With these devices, there is no inherent value in the card itself - if an employee loses a plastic swipe card, a new card can be issued and reprogrammed. Many hostels and hotels use this system - when people leave, management wipes that card clear of its memory and issues a different card to the next guest, with a completely different code.

“If someone leaves, you just swipe out their card number from the central registry. You can do that with remotes, with swipe cards, with fingerprint technology and with digital codes,” says Helen.

What can go wrong with a keyless entry system?

There’s less building work involved with changing electronic keys than with traditional locks, but there’s still a lot of administration involved. If a card gets damaged or lost, the system needs to be reprogrammed immediately.

“If you lose a master key, which sometimes happens, we have to rekey the whole place,” Helen says. “A master key gets into every part of the building and it’s a major undertaking to get it all redone. We physically have to go to every door and rekey it.”

Get rid of passes altogether

Fingerprint technology allows you to access a building without any kind of pass.

“A lot of people don’t like carrying around keys; they don’t want swipe cards or remotes or anything,” Helen says. “With fingerprint technology you simply put your middle finger on the reader and it allows you through. Absolutely no one else can pretend to be you - it’s completely safe. It’s very popular and convenient and coming down in cost as well.”
