Protect your business with security monitoring

How security monitoring works

"In the event of an alarm, the security system seizes a phone line, dials an offsite monitoring station, and sends a report to the alarm monitoring company," says Bryce Kertesz of Integrity, specialists in security monitoring.

"That report detects and communicates what's happened, whether it's a break-glass sensor, a passive infra-red sensor, a door sensor, or multiple triggers."

A system that suits

Bryce says a business can tailor security monitoring to its own circumstances. In the event of an alarm, it is your choice how the monitoring station reacts.

"For example, you can tell them to ignore a single activation," he says. "It could be a rat or some sort of interference. Some businesses only want to be contacted for multiple triggers."

Some systems have cameras in the detectors, enabling an image to be sent back to the monitoring station. "If they see a dog they are obviously not going to react, but if they see a person, the response will reflect that," says Bryce.

Reasons for security monitoring

  • Continuity of protection
  • Rapid response to problems
  • Complete record of security-system activity, including incident reports
  • More than a deterrent - provides an action plan for security breaches
  • Security response by trained professionals, keeping staff or business owners out of harm's way
  • Alerts people inside business premises of intruders, enhancing employee safety
  • Filters out false alarms, saving business owners from disruption
  • Potential savings on insurance premiums

Existing alarm system

"Unless you have an antique alarm system, you can add alarm monitoring very easily," Bryce says, pointing out that most commercial alarm systems have the necessary diallers built in.

"A good, new commercial system," he adds, "should have the option of a phone dialler and other options such as mobile phone contact technology."

Choosing a security provider

Consider the following when choosing an alarm monitoring company:

  • Cost: Is the monitoring service vastly more expensive or a long way under what others are quoting? If so, ask why.
  • Range of services: How will the security monitoring company tailor its service to the specific needs of your business?
  • Technology: Is the technology it offers industry standard? Is it outdated? Is it expensive and overly technical?
  • Reputation: How long has the company been in business? Who are their other clients? Ask for references.
