Finding a solution to vandalism is never easy. According to Justen Radich, owner-operator of Cyclone Security, Blinds and Awnings in North Brisbane, protecting your property against a break-in is one thing, but stopping or limiting vandalism is entirely another.
“First of all, it depends what you call vandalism,” Justen says. “After all, a vandal can be anyone with a spray can. There’s the wanton ‘damage for the sake of it’ kind of vandalism, which is almost impossible to guard against in relation to security doors, whatever they are constructed from. Then there’s the vandalism with a view to breaking through the item that’s being damaged. This burglary-related kind of vandalism is preventable to some extent.
The best way to stop such action is to deter the would-be vandal from attempting to break into your place at all. The highly visible presence of security measures, like a good-quality security screen door and window grilles will help achieve this.
Quite simply, the perpetrator will put your premises in the ‘too hard basket’ and is more likely to move on to a more easily accessible target. That usually means one with reduced security measures - either cheaper-looking, less robust security doors and windows, or somewhere that has nothing more than conventional single-locking doors and windows.
Aluminium or otherwise, Justen says the security doors that provide the best vandalism deterrent and are therefore likely to incur the least damage, are the highest quality ones. “It doesn’t matter whether you install an aluminium or steel security door if it ticks the right security-related boxes. That is, triple or multipoint locking and a proven reputation for robust construction.
“It basically comes down to the quality of every component - they combine to make up the overall door, from the locks and grille system to the door surround itself, as well as the quality of the door frame you’re setting it into.
"When it comes to value for money, cheapest is rarely the best.”
