Why choose steel security doors and windows?

But, according to Justen Radich of Cyclone Security Blinds and Awnings in North Brisbane, there are some trade-offs you need to consider if you choose steel security doors and windows.

Not a pretty face with steel security doors

“Steel shutters and bars on doors and windows aren’t very pleasing on the eye, so I don’t get many people wanting them on their homes unless they live in a really high-risk area,” Justen says. “Steel bars can rust, so it’s worth knowing this before you get them installed, particularly if you live in a coastal area. Steel also costs more than alternatives. Combine this with aesthetic considerations and it’s no wonder steel isn’t the product of choice for people wanting a home that has a welcoming appearance.”

Security doors provide great peace of mind

It may not be a residential favourite, but steel security products are the darling of business. “Steel is especially favoured by retailers who want peace of mind when their shops are closed at night,” Justen says. “In this respect, it doesn’t matter what steel shutters and bars look like, just as long as they do a great job of protection against ‘smash and grabs’.”

Another reason why steel offers great security for commercial premises is that thefts in these environments are often more sophisticated than those targeting residences.

Justen explains: “I heard about an incident where thieves conducted a ‘trial run’ at a premises which wasn’t well secured but was patrolled by a security company. When the alarm sounded, the perpetrators hid and timed how long the guard took to get there. Then they broke in later the same night, making sure to leave before the guard arrived.”

The trade-off

So, according to Justen, if you’re prepared to trade off the look for the benefits as a security deterrent, then steel will work in your favour.

“One practical residential use I do come across is putting bars on casement windows of period homes, because this older-style window is hard to secure effectively any other way,” he says. “But if you are undertaking this, it’s important to consider the fire safety aspect of steel bars across windows - if thieves can’t get through, then neither will you. That said, you can have fire escape grilles installed in the bars so they’ll open, but all this adds to the cost.”
