Having your computers in Sydney set up efficiently

When running several computers, each requiring its own version of the software, expenses can multiply exponentially. Here's how servicing computers in Sydney helped one business get the most out of its network set-up and avoid paying excessive software licensing fees.

The business

A Sydney squash centre had computers situated in separate areas of its business: from the backroom offices to the front counter at reception.

The computers were connected via a network so that any employee could access the company's information at any time. But each computer needed to have software installed individually.

The centre wanted to be able to use their accounting software on the reception computer so that they didn't need to leave the front desk unattended.

The business issue

The centre was using MYOB software for its accounting, which was installed on the computer situated in their office. They expected to be able to use their copy of the program on their reception computer.

"You can't just copy the MYOB system folder from one hard drive onto the hard drive of another computer," John Marroforas of JM Computer Repairs explains. "In most cases it won't work because of the licensing agreements with MYOB."

To use the software legally, the centre would have needed to purchase a licensed version for each computer, or a multiple-licence version.

Computer services solution

The business couldn't afford to buy more licensed software, so they contacted John's computer repairs firm in Sydney for advice.

John's solution was simple: using free third-party remote-access software, he set up the computers so that the one at the reception counter could access the back-office computer remotely.

"They have access to MYOB on the computer at the counter, but it's not actually installed on that computer," John says. "They log in to the other machine and they're accessing MYOB through a different window, off the machine with the licensed software."

Long-term savings

This solution not only saved the squash centre expensive licensing fees for an extra copy of the software, but now means that additional computers can also gain access to the program.

Not only will MYOB be accessible, but this remote access to the main computer can work for any other program that might also require multiple licences or purchases.

The only drawback is that the software will function slightly slower, due to the remote access, and the host computer does need to be turned on and active.

The bottom line

A consultation with a computer repair expert in Sydney not only saved the squash centre multiple licensing fees on their accounting software, but set their system up for future expansion.
